Hello Redditers,

Would love to hear what you guys do to overcome the instant gratification "buy-something-now" urge.

I noticed I didn't seem to have much control over this, and ended-up devising a mental trick on myself.

I have a strict budget on how much I want to spend, and ultimately save and invest every month. Often, when I'm shopping or going out and see something I would love and find really tempting (like donuts and cookies) ... I do a mental trick off forcing myself to do 2 things:

  1. I tell myself that the shop are using clever marketing techniques to convince me to part with my money; and that I'm really just being manipulated. I tell myself that I'm not stupid & not one of Pavlov's dogs, and so force myself to walk past it all, and stick to what I wanted to do originally.

  2. Then, I remind myself that my ability to overcome that momentary emotional impulse is a small victory. That discomfort was a victory because I didn't give in to comfort or laziness. And, that all these gradual tiny victories will lead to a big win. I just picture myself hitting my savings ratio; and sending the extra money to my Vanguard a/c.

Would love to hear what you guys do.

Thanks
