Also asked this on r/castiron, but this sub is equally relevant:
Hi guys, I'm a student living in the Netherlands. I love cooking. Especially pastasauces, stews, chilli's, soups etc. I really like cooking in batches and freeze to save time, money and to control nutrition. I already have a dutch brand (vivo) dutch oven of about 24cm / 4,2L which I love. However I'm thinking of asking my parents for a bigger enameled dutch oven for my birthday (ill probably pay a part lol).
My parents have had a round 7.25 qt / 28 cm / 6,8 L cherry le creuset forever and I've been in love with this pot since I was a child. I'm aware many would suggest a Lodge as a cheaper alternative. However, I hope this pan would last me for life so a one time investment doesnt bother me, neither does it bother my parents I'd guess. I imagine they think its a great gift. Besides sentimental value, I think Le Creuset is the way to go.
This is where I need your advice. I'm in doubt of which one to ask for. I'm eyeing the 7.25qt (28cm, 6,7L) or the 9qt (30 cm, 8,4L) traditional round pot. I know this sounds insane for a student living by himself but I like the idea of being able to cook huge batches if needed. I'm slightly leaning towards the 7.25qt as the 9qt might be a bit overkill. However, in the Netherlands, besides the traditional round version, there is this higher version as well. I noticed this one is not sold in the US in the official le creuset store. It's also 28cm, so the same diameter as the 7.25qt but with a volume of 8L instead of 6,7L. Does anyone own this dutch oven? Does it hold any disadvantages over the normal 7.25qt size? I like the idea of the higher version, it almost fits the same amount of stew/soup/chili as the 9qt while saving some space. What is your advice?
Edit: worth mentioning, the Lodge enameled Dutch ovens are around the same price as Le Creuset and hard to come by.
