I would like to build a very simple pergola on an existing 12x14 deck. Last weekend I dismantled most of it to see what the condition of the joists were and I do need to replace a couple joists. Good news is the ledger board is in perfect shape.In my research on building a pergola, I found that they seem to be way overbuilt, mainly because of aesthetics not because of a structural need. Again, I want something really simple so I present my design.I plan on bolting the 4x4s to the rim joists and using 2x6 for the support of the rafters. I wasn't planning on attaching anything to the house, but will if this design seems unstable. I do have one 2x6 running from the middle 4x4 to the 4x4 on the other side. I want to leave the one end open but am willing to put one between the two 4x4s on the house end if needed. Any advice is appreciated. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2M505je
