Hi all,I recently decided to change the light switches in my apartment. Watched a few YouTube tutorials and decided it wouldn't be too difficult. I upgraded from a toggle switch to a rocker switch. Thing is, the wiring on the old switch looks a bit different than what I expected. There are three wires: a red wire going into the top hole on the back of the old switch, a black wire going into the bottom, and another black wire wrapped around a screw on the side (which I assume must be the grounding wire). On the new switch, I placed the same black wire around the green screws, and the other two into their respective places on the side screws. When I turned the power back on, the switch no longer worked. I thought that maybe I'd gotten mixed up somehow and that the red wire should be the grounding wire, but that didn't work either. I even tried another new switch in the case the one I was using was faulty. And then I tried putting the old switch back on, and that DID work. WTF?PicsI don't know if this makes a difference, but the switch controls a power outlet in the room. Nothing plugged into that outlet works with any of the new switches.x-posted to r/electricians via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2Ir05XQ
