This doesn't work with all airlines/routes, but it does with most. When you find what dates you want, head over to Expedia, enter in the exact same dates, and click on the Hotel/Airfare bundle, then select the box that says you only need a hotel for part of your trip, and select one night hotel anywhere within your flight dates.
Once you hit "Go" you will see a dramatic decrease in price. For example, if you go to google flights today, you will see the cheapest flight from Seattle to London from July 14th to 28th costs $1,309 (and that has a layover each direction).
But, if you go to Expedia and add one night of a hotel, the entire package only ends up costing $894 (and you get a non-stop on one of the legs). You don't need to use the hotel, but if you want to then it is an added bonus! This alone is a savings of over $400!
