I'm trying to turn some old used books into book ends. Step one is to glue the books so that they are hard. Its not really possible to get the glue to penetrate all the way into the books, so only the outside 3/4" or so are glued. It's more than enough to make the books rigid. The next step is to cut the ends at 45 degree angles so that I can glue two books into an L shape (i.e make a miter joint). My problem is that the books are trying to grab whatever saw blades I use as soon as I get past the glued sections. As a result, I'm getting some tear out which will be hidden inside the joint, but the bigger thing is that its just scary. So far I've tried using a table saw and a miter saw. The table saw was making a nice cut, but it kept trying to grab and it felt like it was close to throwing the book back at me. I feel like I'm asking for major kickback, and that's not something I wanna mess with. The miter saw felt better with kickback, but it left a really crappy finish.A band saw seems to be making a nice cut, but it's a pain to get a strait enough cut. Before I spend a ton of time trying to set up fences and angle the table to make it work, I figured I'd ask for ideas here. I haven't used any exotic blades on either of the spinning saws, so if anyone has an idea of a specific type of blade which might work, I'm all ears. None of the blades seemed dull to me, however I could go out and buy a brand new blade and try that. I think the issue is just that paper is super super soft, especially when its not glued, so any kind of spinning blade is gonna want to grab.PS: the books I'm cutting are between 1 and 1.5" thick, so the total length of the miter is ~ 1.5 to 2 inches long. It's not a 1/4" cut or something small like that. Plus the books are heavy enough to do some real damage if they get thrown at me. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2LsTqPw
