Does anyone else find themselves doing this? I feel guilty buying anything for myself if what I have works. My smartphone is 5 years old and was already low end when new, my computer is double that, and my car is nearing 15 years. I've purchased little new clothes in the last several years.
I get by, but realize these items won't last forever. I believe it's gotten worse with time despite having little restraint when buying necessary items for my kids or food/toiletries. My only debt is a mortgage and I have around a year's salary in liquid funds and contribute the maximum to employer's 401K and HSA. I feel the need to compensate every time an unexpected expense arises regardless of the cost.
How do you balance being frugal with what I suppose is self-deprivation?
