I see a large part of simple living is learning how to redefine myself. American society conditions us to define ourselves based on our profession, salary, material possessions, and social sphere. All of the subliminal messages in advertising reinforce and encourage this. I want to learn to define myself, not by these things, but by my hobbies, interests, and true personality. Living simply is also learning to love ourselves and define ourselves by whom we really and truly are. This is something I struggle with, especially at 41, when by society's marker, I should be established in my career and have a family. I am interested in none of these things. I want to define myself by who I really am but I struggle to break free from where society says I should be in the timeline of life.
