I am a new grad just out of college and just got a job in California for 75k a year. The problem is all of the housing near were I work is $1,800+ for a 1 bedroom apartment. I would like to live as close to work as possible so I can work more hours and not be depressed from a long drive home with traffic after long hours and I also would like to live alone if possible so it is quiet at home when I want to work on my own personal projects and I can go elsewhere for fun.

I found an apartment 5 minutes away (drive) from where I work but it is $1,890 a month and I am not sure if this is too much for me? I make a little over $4,500 a month after taxes and $4,300 after putting money towards my 401k. I would love to live this close to where I work but I am not sure I can afford it. Even places 10-15 minutes away are $1,800+ for 1 bedroom as well.

What is my best bet? I wouldn't hate having a roomate but I would prefer my own space. It is really hard to know what I can afford since this is my first full-time job out of college where I am buying my own place as well.

Also I do not have to pay life or car insurance this year. But I would like to have some money to invest and go out on the weekends / save for trips.
