Currently have money only in VTI (other funds too but they aren't related to this question).

VTI is simple and encompasses all Large/Mid/Small caps.

If for some reason I chose to take money out of VTI and allocated amounts/percentages of my assets to each of the individual cap funds such as VOO/VB/VO.

How/would my returns be different or about the same?

I understand the second method is more complicated and would involve me to make sure that my allocations for each fund match the average allocation percentage. Like, I read that 30% should be Large Cap, 20% should be Mid and 20% should be Small (don't know if this is true) or even simply trying to match how VTI has it's funds allocated. But going with the second route I know I'll have to re-balance frequently.

But does this even make a difference in returns as opposed to sticking with just VTI?
