So my partner and I have an unofficial rule that we never use our debit cards. Like, ever. They're in a drawer somewhere. When we purchase things, we use credit cards and pay them off in full every month. It's a good system and we don't fight about money. We also have run in to our cards being skimmed, money being charged, etc, and all of that is super easy to deal with with credit cards. One phone call and it's their problem to deal with.

Not so with debit cards- if someone steals your card information or overcharges you, the money is gone out of your account and this can be a huge pain to deal with depending on how much they took.

So recently, we opened "personal money" funds, wherein a set amount is auto-deposited into a bank account for each of us to use as we'd like for the month. We can save the money if we'd like, etc. We did this because separating out our personal money and keeping track of it from family money was beginning to be a huge pain.

I also, recently, signed up for a free trial of one of those subscription clothes box things, and stupidly, I put my personal money debit card info down. I broke my rule. I didn't quite like the service as much as it was going to cost me, so I tried to cancel. Predictably, this was difficult. They make you talk to a rep to cancel (and that just makes me want to cancel so much more when they try to convince you not to leave), and they said eventually it was done. Then, a day or two later I continued to receive emails about it, so I contacted them again, and they said that finally it was actually cancelled. I could no longer log in to my account so I figured that was that.

A day later they charged me $80 which came straight out of my bank account. And of course they're M-F 9-5, so I had to wait a few days. I talked to my bank, reported the charge as fraudulent, and finally got ahold of a customer service person at this subscription service and they refund it.

Moral of the story: use debit cards sparingly if at all possible.
