Me and my wife are trying to cut down on food cost but I don't see how some people do it. I have seen other people's monthly food bills and I don't understand how they can spend so little on food without couponing or buying unhealthy foods. I've seen people spend 600$ a month on groceries for 4-5 people and I don't understand how they do it unless they are doing the above..

I have calculated it out month by month for the past 6 months and know how much we spend. We spend about 700-850$ on groceries a month and I can't seem to get lower than this.

So my question is, is the cheapest I can spend monthly, 700-850$ on groceries for two, buying mostly healthier foods or am I missing something? (We shop at Walmart for everything except meats and Sam's for meats and protein shakes. We attempt to go to local grocery store called Budget Saver for some items which are cheaper than Walmart). We almost always eat leftovers as well.

Here is some information.

Location: Louisiana

Shop: Walmart & Sams for 95% of items.

Foods: Weekly

Vegetables (All fresh) - Bell peppers, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach (in plastic container), lettuce (bagged), sometimes avacados

Fruit - Bananas

Meats - 80/20 or 85/15 ground meat, chicken drumsticks or boneless skinless chicken breast, every now and then a rump roast, tilapia every other week, bacon(usually last us the month)

Starches - White Jasmine Rice, sometimes regular and sweet potatoes, sometimes noodle packages

Dairy - Almond Milk, eggs, cheese

Liquids - Diet Cranberry & water

Other - Almond peanut butter & regular peanut butter

I think that is about everything. I don't buy any meats or vegetables labeled "organic". We both don't eat that much, 3-4 times a day for me with about 6oz of meat each meal, 1-2 cups veggies and for her 2 times a day and she barley eats meat at all (Just ground meat)
