So I have been looking at all the posts on fire pits and I see all the comments about everything people do wrong. There seem to be a few things that people consistently comment on: -make sure there is a good stable base (packed down gravel or similar) -have some way for water to drain (again more gravel) -use either a metal ring or fire bricks to avoid killing everyone I know with broken block shrapnel. -have some holes in the sides near the bottom to allow for air flow and better fire with less smoke. My question revolves around the last two important requirements. If I am using a fire ring, how do I get air flow from the bottom? It seems like the people that use a metal ring will then fill up the fire pit with gravel until it reaches the bottom of the ring. That would seem to block up any sort of air flow in my mind. Maybe I am overthinking things, but if I am going to build one, I want to do it right. My plan is to build a fire pit with pea gravel sitting area. I plan on likely using a block kit from a landscape supply shop and will likely use metal fire ring because it seems easier than lining with fire brick. I live in Massachusetts so need to consider the cold weather and build a solid base. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2KJ6OhV
