I am finishing up a fire pit project and was hoping for some advice. I used retaining wall concrete bricks for the fire pit (about 4 feet in diameter), but I am now concerned because I am reading a lot of comments that say those bricks are not fire safe and will crack (or worst case they could even explode). I know the normal options are fire bricks or a steel ring. Both of those options are pretty expensive though, and I don't think they would look very good with my design. One idea I had was to add a layer of compacted dirt around the inside wall of the fire pit, maybe about 4 inches thick. Would that do anything to protect the retaining wall bricks from heat? I really don't know if that would be at all effective...I am interested to hear what more knowledgable people think of this idea. If that won't work, is there any good alternative? via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2LhhxRk
