Planter box photosSo inspired by “theguywholied” and my wife reminding me I said I’d build one, I finally made a cedar planter box. Another will be built tomorrow. We use to have (2) 36x96 planter boxes I made two years ago from some left over 5/4 decking. We decided to move them as a neighbors tree was shading them too much. And they promptly fell apart, as expected, from wood not meant to be buried.I thought about getting some galvanized steel fire rings to use but the cost was quite high for what we would get. A 36”x18” ring would cost $55 and the 48” were $77.So wanting something that would last longer I wanted to do cedar. I saw a post recommending the use of dog-ear fence planks. Sure enough, the menards a town over had 1x6x6’ planks for $3 each. Picked up 20 of them and some pressure treated 4x4x’6’ and deck screws. This was enough material to make two 36”x72”x18” planter boxes for less than $100. And being all 6’ material, it fit in my forester so I didn’t need the trailer.I cut all the dog-ears off and pre-drilled all fasteners to prevent splitting. With the extra planks I added some vertical supports to the long span to make things more rigid once filled. And I know, I could have put the 4x4 posts on the inside. Because modern treated wood doesn’t have the chemicals like the old stuff. But this creates a cleaner inside when I use the tiller in it. And it feels a bit more solid in the torsional sense.Anyways, I was surprised how cheaply I was able to make these. Hopefully it will inspire. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2IPhlqG
