I currently have a 2005 Ford Focus SE stick shift. I plan on keeping this vehicle for longer trips.

I get about 30mpg. One way to work is 27 miles, 5 days a week. Which means I drive 1080 miles every 4 weeks to and from work. Total fuel is 36 gallons at a rate of $3.50/gallon equals, $126 a month. I round to $135 to offset the extra days. Add in average maintenance of $65 a month and we have:

$200 a month or $2400 a year.

With an electric vehicle I get free charging at work and charging at home would be minimal but also is already included in cost of unit. So there would be no electrical cost.

I'm thinking about buying a 2012 Nissan Leaf SV for around $6000. While this car has some age and the battery no longer holds a full charge. It will have around 50 mile range estimated. Time to recover initial investment would be 2.5 years. In that time the car battery will experience more degradation. By the end of 2.5 years the car will still have around 30-35 mile range (probably more). Still enough to get to work. At that point it will just be saving me commuting costs. Car batteries last longer if only charged to 80% which is my plan to make the battery last as long as I can.

Once the battery no longer gets me to work I can replace it for $5500 and then the car will last a very long time. 5-8 years I would guess.

Insurance: I only carry liability insurance right now and plan to do the same with the leaf. No additional cost

Registration: This will be an increase. Probably $150 for a year. And then $250 due to CA new law. Sdg&e has a $200 rebate for electric vehicles. This will cover the cost of registration overall.

Risks: 1. Battery dies right away. Plan of action: I buy a new battery pack and car lasts a lot longer 2. I get into an accident my fault. I lose the car and my initial investment. Not much I can do if I don't carry comprehensive/collision.

Would like to know what you guys think of this plan? Is there anything more I should consider? Any other common risks I forgot?

Thanks for reading!!!!!
