Basically it's the reverse Vimes boot theory.
For me it's inline 3.5mm inline volume control for earbuds.
Nothing comes in the length that I specifically need so I always end up opening them up, cutting the wire to shorten it, solder it, and glue it back together again.
It's a lot of work, but I get what I want. Sometimes they break, but I repair them, and eventually something goes terminally wrong. Like the plug at either end developing a terminal short, or the potentiometer itself developing scratcthy static sound from being banged around and living in my pocket.
They're 99c each, and it when they break, I just order a couple more at a time for backups.
I also buy lower quality down jackets. I live in down jackets, so a better quality one with better loft would be great, but since I wear them all the time, I prefer to wash them more often than I should. I end up killing them in 2-3 years of 24/7/150 wearing, but I still keep them around as 'liners' for my new jackets and 'boosters' for really cold days.
