We are in Minnesota and have a below grade basement with some horrible 70s carpet that we use for storage. I would love to replace this with some inexpensive vinyl stick tile I can put down myself. However, this basement is also where our cat stuff (litter boxes, food, mayhem) is and I can't kick them out for longer than a couple hours. I also have young kids and could only work on this project a few hours at a time. All of this means I would like to avoid having to seal the concrete floor, because all sealers say to do the whole floor at once, have good ventilation, and keep kids and pets away for 1-3 days. Can I skip it? Is there some low VOC alternative or a something I can paint on in 20 square foot sections as I go? I know the risk of not sealing is the tile pealing up, but the carpet that is down there is wrinkled in places, the pad is disintegrating, and it is impossible to clean. Would a bond enhancer help with the pealing risk? I feel even a C- tile job would be better than what is there now but I also want the basement to be livable. Any advice appreciated. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2HA6a4A
