Recently family issues got me in trouble at work. A family member did something that got me in trouble with security, I won't go into details. Because of this I was sent home by HR and had to miss a week of work. Simultaneously, I did not get a promotion I worked hard to achieve.
Safe to say, I was upset at this time in my life. I needed a few days, weeks to get over that I hadn't gotten what I thought I deserved. To me it felt like I wouldn't be promoted regardless of what I did. The family issues requiring me out of work made it worse, so by the time I returned to work I was unhappy. But, I was ready to move on shortly after. HR informed no one would know what occurred, and that I wouldn't be judged on this going forward for any raises or promotions.
After my 2nd week back, I was let go by the company. They told me it was their belief that I am unhappy with the company. They're an at will employer.
I'm not sure what to do with this severance package. It gives me 8 weeks pay with condition that I lose my right for re-employment with the company, along with obvious conditions such as not suing the company, giving away trade secrets, or talking bad about the company (one of the reasons for my disclosure).
One thing I don't want to lose is my right to unemployment. The company will not contest my right, but the severance will be reported to the state.
I know I should speak to an actual attorney, however I am aware that attorneys browse this subreddit. I would be happy to speak with someone confidentially. Thanks.
