Possible way to extend Amazon Prime membership for $99

Amazon today announced they are raising the price of Prime from $99 to $119 (for US based customers).
Back in 2014, they went from $79 to $99 but there was apparently a way to extend an existing membership:

Basically, you bought a Prime Membership gift for yourself to be delivered the day after your existing Membership exires, then you turn off auto-renew for your existing membership.
