I'm 19. Going into the Air Force soon, already sworn in, and hoping to get my first car within the next year. There's basically no competition when it comes to Toyota vs any other manufacturer in terms of cost of maintenance in the long term.

I'm willing to fix basically anything wrong with a car short of replacing the engine and the transmission by myself. I'll probably have access to our mechanic shop when I get to the base I'm going to be at for awhile, so it probably won't be me fixing the car by myself, and I probably won't need to buy any tools in addition.

In my situation would it save me money in the short and long term to buy a running used car or a non-running used car? I only plan on ever getting a Toyota unless something magical happens and I get a Lexus for a really good deal. Article on car maintence cost of a 10 year period. I'm assuming it holds true for the coming ten years.
