When I first started my career (mid 2015), I moved from DC to NY as an intern to work for the company at which I would eventually be employed full-time. Three months later (late 2015), still as an intern, my company asked me to move back to DC where I lived for a little more than a year and was eventually hired as a full time employee. At the very beginning of 2017, I was again asked to move, back to NY, still with this company. All this time, I realized when filing my 2017 taxes, I was being charged a state tax for both DC and NY. I know I should have realized it sooner, but it was my first job, my checks were deposited directly, and with each of those moves came title/salary changes, so my paychecks changed quite a bit in that period too. How should I go about getting that money back? It’s a couple thousand dollars. Is it the IRS’ responsibility to pay it back for being the ones who have it, or is it on my job for being the ones who released the money in the first place? I tried to get it solved last tax season, but the person from whom I sought help wasn’t very helpful— understandably so.

Any ideas on how I can get this money back?
