My wife and i bought a house that was built in the 60s. It has an attic fan that hasnt worked since we have owned it but i wanted to change that this weekend. I looked at what was wrong with and all i could tell was that the motor had gone bad and that the previous owner had covered the whole unit it with plastic. Im assuming they covered it because there was new insulation blown in somewhat recently. So i took down the old motor and actually had a replacement ready to go. After replacing the fan I went back down into the house to test it out and make sure everything was in working order. I flipped the switch and noticed that, besides being pretty loud it only seemed to be pulling the vents about half way back. I took a piece of paper and held it to the fan with it on and it really didnt seem to suck it in much unlike a bathroom fan that can hold it against the vent. Its worth noting that I have zero experience with attic fans besides getting electricity to them. But it seems to me like there should have been more suction. I DID not have any windows open to the outside which i realized later may have been the issue but have since then cleaned up and dont plan on going back into the attic until I have a better understanding of what i should be doing. I feel like in past houses ive been able to feel when an attic fan was turned on ie. sucking in of windows. I just dont know what im doing, everything was oiled and spins freely the motor was tested and works fine. Should i feel suction? Also the blown in insulation is that going to be an issue with a whole house attic fan?TLDR Replaced old whole house attic fan motor. Cant feel much suctions (no windows open though) also have blow-in insulation in attic is that going to be an issue?Note** attic fan was replaced with a stronger motor 1/2hp from 1/3hp but has the same rpm 1725 via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2JP4d5W
