Hello PF first time poster here! I did read the wiki but id like to get some more specific anwsers!

A bit of a story with this issue, a few years ago I was getting emails from a Canadian universities bookstore(I am Canadian and did go to university but not this one not was it anywhere near this one) about a textbook rental that needed to be returned. I ignored these because I never went to that university. I kept receiving emails from them every few months telling me to return the book and then one final email saying the debt for the amount of the book had gone to collections.

At this point I decided to check my textbook rental account(all the universities use the same one) and the offending book was on there. I called the rental company and they said they couldn't do anything now that it was in collections. I tried calling the collections agency and they brushed me off so I said screw it I'll just leave it.

Now to the present the collections agency has finally decided to email me. I almost didn't see it because it went in my junk folder.

Here are my questions; if they haven't mailed or called me should I still ignore this? If I ask them to verify the debt can they somehow pin it on me because it's on my rental account? Is asking them to verify the debt my next move?

Note: this hasn't showed up on my credit score as far as I can tell.
