My partner and I live in a 2 bed/1.5 bath condo where we pay just under $1,000/month total for the mortgage. Since we moved in, we always considered it a starter home and we would buy a house (probably about 3 bed/2 bath, for $2k+/month in mortgage payments) sometime down the road.

But lately, we've been thinking where we are might make a good forever home. I've started to get obsessed with this idea and how nice our lives could be if we did it, so I wanted to start a discussion about it on here and see what my fellow simple living friends think! Would especially love to know if any of you are currently in this situation.

The number one reason we would want to stay here is money, but mainly because paying less than half what we would in a house would open a lot of opportunities. Aside from general savings, we would be able to travel more, pay for our child(ren) to go to college, and one of us may even be able to be a stay at home parent for a few years without too much of a financial strain. That last one is something we always assumed we would never be able to do, so that's a big deal.

It also seems like a good idea because we do like the unit a lot and the price is extremely good for the area, where we have good schools, good hospitals, can walk to the beach/fun downtown area/nice parks, and our family and friends are very close by.

The biggest reason to move would be because of the lack of space. It's definitely not bad between the two of us, but it might get tight once we have children. We figured we would probably only be able to have one kid to be comfortable in this space, which kind of appeals to us in its own way (really a whole other topic). I realize that we could have more kids, but it's not something I would personally want to do if we were staying in the condo.

On the other hand, the lack of space is sort of freeing. It's a great excuse to let go of clutter and stuff you don't need, plus stop you from buying more stuff you don't need. I grew up in a fairly large house and it's still filled with tons of junk that my parents have accumulated. I definitely don't want that for my own home. This condo is a lot easier to clean than a house, too.

We think it would be ideal to have our own independent home with a yard, but not having to do upkeep ourselves is definitely a plus.

Thoughts?
