TL;DR New to credit but already hate Capital One. Need a card for work expenses. Looking for advice for a decent starter (USA) credit card.
As the title says I am 30 and looking to apply for my first credit card and credit product ever. I have successfully avoided credit for my entire adult life. I recently got a new job that requires quite a bit of air travel and travel expenses both of which I am asked to pay up front which gets reimbursed to me. Depending on when I file my expenses in my pay period I can go up to a month before I get reimbursed. I get paid a livable wage but it’s a modest mid 5 figure salary.
I’ve been able to keep up this far mostly but it’s honestly becoming a bit of a struggle. Recently I had to buy international airfare and I just couldn’t cover it myself. I had to ask my parents to buy most of the ticket until I was reimbursed so I could reimburse them. They had no issue with it at all and were happy to help but I was not happy to ask.
I have given it some thought and I decided to get a credit card and start building up my score so I can eventually throw these expenses onto a card and pay it off immediately when my reimbursements come in.
From what I’ve been researching online, using it and paying off my balances right away should help me build my credit limit up reasonably quickly. I’ve also signed up for Credit Karma, the only card it recommends to me is some crappy capital one (surprise) secured card I am not interested in.
I really would like to use an institution other than Capital One for reasons I don’t need to go into.
I have done some Googling for decent starter cards online and I’m having a seriously hard time differentiating real advice from advertisements posing as blogs/advice columns. Not to mention Capital One ads as far as the eye can see or expensive terrible “bad credit” cards or student cards which I don’t qualify for because they want school information in the application or a .edu email address.
I feel like there’s got to be a decent card out there for someone just starting out in the credit world who isn’t a student and doesn’t have financial issues or “bad” credit? Do you guys have any advice on an at least decent starter credit card?
