Hi,
I'm in a weird situation. My friend drove from North Carolina to California and had been here (in CA) for a few months. He took a trip back to NC and asked if I could watch his car for a week until he got back. Well, over a week happens, then 2 weeks, then 3 and I can't reach him at all. Eventually I found out he's in jail. He said there were child support payments he owed that he didn't know about, and that it accumulated and he can't pay it off.
I managed to contact him, and he said he has to stay there for 3 months minimum, but possibly up to 6 months. I asked what to do with his car? He told me that he can't make the payments and that its going to get repo'd. I've been parking it on the street, and moving it whenever theres a street cleaning day. He said I can just let all the tickets rack up, and let it get towed.
We couldn't talk for long on the phone, and I have no problem doing that -- besides the fact that it sounds like a really awful idea. He sounded really stressed out, and I know he's the type of person that doesn't want to burden anybody. I just want to help out if I can, and I don't want him to be in even more debt when he gets out.
What do you think is the best thing for me to do? (within the confines of the law, obviously)
tl;dr: My friend is in jail in NC. I have his car in CA. He can't make payments. In his best financial interest, should I let it get towed or should I do something else?
