Hello r/frugal,
My mother’s partner didn’t let her update the house during their relationship. She’s living in a house built in 1990 and looking to renovate a bit to modernize it. She’s thinking new floors, new countertops throughout, painting cabinets, painting the walls, a couple new appliances, new baseboards, potentially new windows, and knocking down one wall to open up the dining room. (I know this is a long list, we will probably do the “essentials” for now and work on the others as she saves more money.)
She is on a tight budget, and we want to make sure we don’t waste any money. We are open to DIY and any other tricks y’all may have to save money. We are planning on looking through Craigslist to gather other people’s discards from home renovations, going to a Habitat for Humanity Restore, using online vendors, coupons, and exercising patience. Do you have any nuggets of wisdom for a couple of people who haven’t done any house renovations before?
Thank you!
