I'm a 17 year old living in northern Minnesota. My family is very religious, and when I tell them that I'm not they're going to freak and cut all ties with me. I’ve seen it happen before with other members of their church, and it’s not pretty.

A rundown of my situation:

-I have a job at walmart and I have around 3000 dollars saved up in a joint bank account with my mother.

-I’ve been accepted into a local state school, and I’ve got a scholarship for $1000 per semester. (The tuition at the school is $4200 a semester.)

-I’m planning on renting an apartment with two very supportive friends who are well aware of my situation. We haven’t decided exactly where we’re going to rent, and I’ve pitched it to my parents as a way for me to live closer to the campus.

-When I do get estranged, it’ll probably be around June, and if everything goes according to plan I’ll have moved into the apartment by then.

What are some steps I should take to prepare for living on my own? I turn 18 at the end of April, and I’m planning on opening up a bank account and trying to transfer the money I’ve made into it, but other than that is there anything I can do to be financially secure?
