For example, instead of owning a printer you may pay for printing at a self-serve kiosk when you need it. This may make your life more simple because you don’t have to worry about maintaining ink supplies and storing the device but in reality you’re just outsourcing the complexity to someone else. You’re life still relies heavily on the limited resources, wires, businesses, computer chips and entire complex industries behind the scenes to support your ‘simple’ way of life.
The reason I raise this is because too often I see people humble bragging about their ‘oh so simple and ‘natural’ lifestyles such as vandwellers etc etc..when in truth they actually depend heavily on the very complex infrastructure they love to criticise like roads, trucks, marketing, debt, corporations and a push for ever increasing productivity. The only difference is that it’s out of sight out of mind. They are the ones who catch an Uber instead of owning a car yet are happy to turn a blind eye to the invisible exploitation of drivers because it’s not their problem.
I guess what I’m saying is, these people need to appreciate that they exist within a greater system and the world doesn’t revolve around them. I fully support the desire for simple living but let’s be mindful about our role in the world not just focused on ourselves. Also, I’m not here to judge anyone who relies on these systems (we all do) but I am specifically talking about the hypocrites who act as if they are morally above everyone else when they are actually just standing on the shoulders of others.
End of rant.
