Hey all, I get that there have been a lot of concerns lately about the sub not focusing on products that you can currently purchase which qualify as "buy it for life." Without wanting to get into a meta-debate about the sub (again), I thought I'd at least make an attempt at reviewing a product which might be buy-it-for-life.
Scanpan non-stick cookware is an interesting option for cookware and I think strongly worth your consideration.
Positives: I'm a home cook, and I love my Scanpan. It is a significant step up in quality from the average buy-the-whole-set for a few hundred bucks non-stick cookware you find at department stores, etc. It heats evenly and the nonstick performance is very good. It is almost certainly not professional grade cookware and I imagine that the most skilled home chefs would know the difference between this option and the very pricey carbonized stainless steel, copper, etc. But for my uses it is excellent.
The non-stick should never wear and is not in danger of scratching off.
Obviously cast iron is buy-it-for-life, and I have nothing against cast iron (I own and use cast iron as well)-- but frankly, it's just not for everything or everyone. For my needs, often having to quickly whip up something, and not being able to be fastidious about rust-prevention after the cleanup, I have to have at least a decent skillet that isn't cast iron, and it winds up doing a lot of work.
Negatives: That said, my pan did develop an issue. What appeared to be rust or rust-like discoloration appeared rather abruptly despite good care on my part. However, here is where the "is it buy it for life?" debate really gets complicated. The pans come with a lifetime warranty. Scanpan customer service, though a little cautious about it, have honored the warranty for me and are replacing the item (they asked me to try cleaning it according to a special technique, and made clear they are on the lookout for abuse of the warranty by unethical customers. But after one email back-and-forth they were quite cooperative about replacing the item.) Now, I recognize that the whole idea of a buy it for life item is that in theory you shouldn't need to replace it, ever. I get that. I'm also aware that warranties come and go and are only as good as the company's continued willingness to honor them. But to me, if a product has such a warranty and the company demonstrates that it will stand by the warranty, it's an indication that the company at least anticipates the product truly lasting a lifetime. I suspect my pan was an aberration and that the replacement will genuinely last forever, given proper care.
So there you have it. An attempt at a review of a product you can buy right now, which might very well be buy-it-for-life.
