I discovered this after going vegan and looking into fake meats, but it turns out there's some types that aren't as well known but are very cheap and quite good. Notably TVP and seitan.

Where I live you can buy 400g of TVP for au$4.80 (at the cruelty free shop if you're aussie) which makes about 1.6-2kg when hydrated. Compare this to the price of the meat equivalent which I haven't found cheaper than au$5/kg (which is the price on sale).

Seitan you can make at home from flour. It has a decent texture and with the low cost of flour (au$0.75/kg) you can easily make enough for a family meal for under a dollar or two depending on how much you use. Though I will say that you'll get more calories per dollar if you just make flatbread.
