My mom gave me a hair dryer for Christmas in 2004. I was in elementary school and I had thick, thick hair down to my butt. With the dryer, it took like an hour to dry my hair, but it came out so smooth and straight!
As the years went on, I cut my hair shorter but I still used my trusty hair dryer to dry my hair. I used it nearly every day in middle school, high school, college, and before work in post-grad life. I sometimes wondered when the thing would give out, but it was still blowing hot air and taking the same amount of time (around 30 minutes every day) to dry my very thick hair, so it's still a perfectly fine machine! No need to buy a newer one, right?
I recently had to go cross-country to visit family. I usually check a bag and bring my hair dryer, but this was a short trip, so I opted for a carry on instead and had to leave my beloved hair dryer behind. I stayed with my cousins, and asked to borrow theirs.
Wow. Holy moly. That thing had POWER! I dried my hair in under 10 minutes. I emerged from the bathroom over the moon - holy shit, cousins, that machine was insane! Is that a top of the line hair dryer? No, they said, it's a cheap piece of shit from Amazon, what are you talking about?
I immediately ordered the same exact one. I used it for the first time this morning. Under 10 minutes to dry my hair. How much of my life have I lost because I didn't want to spend $35? I only dry my hair every other day nowadays, but saving 15 minutes each time, that's an extra hour a week I could have been doing literally anything other than holding a hair dryer in one hand and a comb in the other.
TL;DR: If your shit is really old, borrow newer versions from friends and family to see if the technology has improved over the years. You might be able to spend a small amount of money to greatly improve your quality of life and save a ton of time.
