I've recently become disillusioned with the community at personal finance based on a pretty wholesale attitude of buy index funds and don't worry about anything else. Honestly, this advice will solve a lot of problems for those just starting out or with a long term outlook on retirement or other such financial goals. It doesn't do a lot in addressing some of the more nuanced needs that people might have.

Subsequently, I've started poking around here and discovering there is still a lot of misconception and misinformation on personal finance and effective planning techniques. I'm hoping that some can comment here with their own experiences. Has anyone worked with advisors, planners, stockbrokers, accountants etc? Have you gone it alone or some combination of the two? What were some of the success stories or stories of frustration? I do work in the industry and I am always looking for ways to better understand the different attitudes towards personal finance so all input is welcome.
