Hi all-
Quick question. I’m an independent contractor for a company that paid me ~72k for 2017
When I got my 1099, there was an additional 8k, and my total was ~80k (on the form).
When contacting them, they told me thank you for finding the error and that they had contacted their accountant. Accountant says that they’ll cut me a check for $8,000 this year (for some work I’m doing for them now), pay the rest regularly, and that I’ll have to pay taxes on the $8,000 for last year. With the thought being I’ll have to pay 8k less in taxes this year.
Could I be getting screwed here at all? Anything I should worry about? Is this illegal? Can it come back to bite me?
