I just found an app yesterday that lets you block advertising trackers from your browser. A lot of sites I visit regularly don't have ads anymore, and hopefully I'll be seeing less "BUY" messaging that's directly targeted at me.
Some of you will understand why this is frugal, but for the few of you who don't: advertising is actually very effective even if you think you're immune to it. By limiting the advertising I'm exposed to, and especially by preventing advertisers from using my internet activity to advertise specifically to my interests, I'm a lot less likely to spend money on things I don't need.
The app I'm using is called Ghostery, but there are probably others that work as well. I also chose to opt out of letting them collect analytical data from me. They seemed very transparent that they wouldn't use the info for marketing profiles, but I chose to decline just in case.
