My fiance and I may have the opportunity to move from Toronto (population 4mil) to Peterborough (population 80k).
I've lived in Toronto my whole life. I take the convenience and walkability for granted. Growing up, there was lots to do and it was easy to get around the city.
However, there are some huge downsides to living in Toronto. Our transit system is really struggling. Many days you can't even get onto the train because it's packed. As a claustrophobic, I absolutely hate it. It's also generally overwhelming living in the city sometimes. I prefer to have more personal space, and to live in cleaner surroundings.
Peterborough is a really nice town, in my opinion. It's big enough that they have most things, but small enough that there's not a lot of traffic. It's a 1.5 hour drive from Toronto. We would be car-dependent, but I think that's okay. I can still get exercise by walking for pleasure.
I'd love to hear your perspective on city sizes, and moving from a big city to a smaller one. Especially if you live in a place with a similar population size (80k).
Thanks!!
