There is a nice grocery store right down the street from my office that offers a great variety of prepared foods for $7.99/lb. I'm talkin' mashed potatoes, Mac & Cheese, chicken fingers, popcorn shrimp, all kinds of salads and toppings, pierogis, meatloaf, fresh fruit, etc.

I know that this sort of "pay by weight" thing is probably inherently NOT cost effective, but I am looking for some tips on making it MORE cost effective.

One good tip I've gotten so far is: avoid bone-in chicken like drumsticks because you're paying for the weight of the bone you can't eat.

Any other tips? All the food goes into a Styrofoam container and is weighed. Salad goes in a plastic container and is weighed.
