Hey r/PF.
At my current position I make $69,500 which is about ~$6000 below market for my position given the size of my company, our location, and my experience. I was recently given a written offer with another company that would have a starting salary of $83,000. My current employer offers a 4% 401k match with an additional variable profit share (4-6%) in a lump sum 401k contribution but no cash bonuses whatsoever. The new employer offers only a 3% match but annual cash bonuses between 5-15% depending on performance. All other benefits are about the same (PTO, insurance, company phone, etc). I estimate the new position would pay about $15,000 more (the rough difference in 401k contributions is included in that number).
Neither position offers significant upward mobility within the respective company, but the new position is a title bump (Network Engineer -> Network Division Manager). The additional responsibilities and experience will help my long-term career trajectory. Both positions offer 4-5% yearly salary increases.
My current job is located in a suburb of Portland and is a 36 mile round trip commute and takes about 1.25-1.5 hours round trip of rage inducing traffic.
The new position would be almost exactly 200 miles round trip but all entirely country highways with no traffic. I did the drive on Friday and it takes a solid 3.5 hours round trip.
Additional wear-and-tear on my car is somewhat a concern, but it is a late model (2015) BMW which will have a warranty (extended through my Credit Union) to 200,000 miles.
There is no immediate option to relocate to the town with the new job; my partner will be unable to find work there that would advance her career (or even just be a lateral move). Realistically, I would be looking at making this commute for at least the next 12-18 months.
It is in our 3-5 year plan to buy a house, and I feel the title bump that would come with this position (as well as the extra pay, all of which would be earmarked for savings) would do well to set us up for that. I also think the new position would be more challenging and rewarding. However, that commute is going to be an ass-kicker. I've also considered potentially renting a room out there so a couple nights a week I can have the option to stay locally if I get stuck late or the weather is too bad to make the drive, but I have to be very careful to not spend too much on that room that I negate the pay increase too much. It'd probably be possible to find a room in the ~$300/mo range.
What would you do in my shoes?
