Frugality is often seen as a negative. However, it has given me the opportunity to quit work and retire before 30.
I often found food/groceries were the most expensive. But I keep seeing article and news outlet reporting the reason why America is getting fat is because cheap food (energy drinks, junk food, etc. is cheaper). Being as frugal as I am, I know that is not correct.
The truth is people don't want to make the time to buy and make food. Answer: Jitz Do It (see what I did there? :)) and get a slow cooker.
Here's my breakdown of how I keep my grocery bill relatively low.
Single/Active/Male/Big Appetite
Each week:
Whole Organic Chicken: $15
18 ct Organic Eggs: $3.50
Fresh Made Sourdough Loaf: $3
Organic Mushrooms: $3
Organic Spinach: $2
Organic Kale: $1
Green Peppers: $3
Organic Oatmeal (Bulk): $1
Organic Coconut/Almond Milk: $1.50
Organic Apples: $2
Oranges: $4
Organic Sweet Potatoes: $5
Organic Cans of Beans (2): $2
Misc. (i.e tortillas, chips, salsa, odds and ends):$5-$10
NOTE: I pick a ton of berries in the summer and package them in the freezer. Like 20 1-gallon bags worth. I use this for my smoothies and oatmeal. I also pitch in and buy a quarter cow once a year. Or if I'm lucky I'll get some meat from a hunt.
What do you guys think? Are you able to do something similar?
I want to hear from folks who really disagree, because I can't begin to understand how it's cheaper to eat unhealthy pre-packaged foods.
