When I download my W-2 into Turbotax, box 12c is a "W" code which I understand can be either company paid or employee paid HSA contribution. Well mine is paid by me through payroll deductions. As I finalize my taxes I see a line called "other income" of $7750 which is the exact amount I contributed to my HSA, and I am being taxed on it. When I change the "W" code to an "R" (that's another code for a different HSA type - just to experiment) the tax goes away and my refund is up over $2000. I am sure I won't get away with using a code different than the one on my W-2. I have seen a thread in the Turbotax site on this topic and at least one person has had my experience with no resolution. Anyone have any insight?
