I turn 25 in March and for the past 3 years I've worked in 2 typical office 9-5's (8-4 in my current job, actually). In both jobs I've had salary and benefits, and especially with my currently job, enough to pay my bills and then some.
But part of me really wants to leave the corporate world for something simpler. My favorite job was a summer during college working for my township's road department. It was mostly park maintenance but I also helped the main guys with other stuff around town. I loved being outside, on my feet, doing physical labor that I could really see the end-results of. I could also let my mind be free. While cutting the grass of the park, my mind could wonder to whatever it felt like.
But in my corporate jobs (both IT), I needed constant focus regarding a particular skill set. I sit at a desk for several hours staring at a computer helping people with a software that I don't use and couldn't care less about.
I'd love to get back to something like my road department job, but my biggest worry is obviously a drop in pay and possibly loss of benefits. I make about $67k/year now and get annual raises. I live with my girlfriend and her PhD stipend is only about $27k/year, so I'm the main moneymaker keeping our lives afloat.
I'd love to here some stories/tips for downgrading from a cushy corporate job to a simpler job that may not pay as well, even if you try to convince me to not leave my current job.
