Having a good selection of spices is as important as having a well stocked pantry/larder. Without a good spice rack, eating out is a greater temptation because you'll get bored with the same limited menu you're stuck with at home.
Don't buy from the spice isle at the grocery store except for the most basic (Salt, pepper, dried oregano and that sort of stuff). Go to a store that has a bulk spice section (like WinCo and QFC) where the prices are about 90% lower, or go to a commercial supplier like Cash & Carry/Smart & Final that sell very large containers for equal savings. Also, Asian and other ethnic markets tend to have spices at a significant savings.
Always leave a little room for new spices in your budget, it will save you money in the long run.
