TL;DR: I need a versatile jacket for around 0˚C/32˚F. My budget is about $350 USD but I'm willing to stretch it up to $400. Also, I need help understanding which jacket would do the trick, since I'm not from a cold country.

Hi BIFL! I have plans of traveling to Lisbon, London and Madrid at the end of this month, and for two weeks into March. I've lived in Mexico City my whole life, so this whole winter clothing thing is completely new to me, and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by all the different options and types of garment and fabrics, etc. Seriously, do you cold weather people get like, a manual at birth or something? :P

By Mexican standards, the weather in February and March in those places is really cold (accuweather says the lowest temperature in Madrid in March is around 0˚C/32˚F), but my understanding is that most winter clothing (with all the layers and technical fabrics) will be overkill, so what I'm looking for is a nice, durable jacket that's waterproof or water resistant, and will keep me warm by itself at those temperatures. I'd really like to get a single garment that accomplishes both as best as possible.

I expect to be doing a lot of city walking, so I'd prefer something not too technical-looking. That being said, I do like the rugged look of more outdoors-y brands, and I do go out camping fairly frequently to the forest-y areas in Mexico (which, during the shoulder months of winter sometimes reach -5˚C/23˚F), so I'd really like a jacket that I can treat roughly and won't look out of place in either the city or the forest. Also, I don't have a problem with layering underneath the jacket, should the need arise.

I've been searching for a few days now, and I've fallen in love with Fjällräven and Patagonia, but I need a little help understanding which jacket to get. Some questions:

  • Is a Fjällräven winter jacket something I could wear on its own, or do I need an insulating layer underneath?
  • What about 3 in 1 jackets? Are those a good idea?

I'm open to any suggestions! Thanks (:
