I've had a GameStop gift card for two years and went to use it this weekend. At the register, it said the gift card didn't exist. I knew it had $25 on it and the card says it has no expiration dates and no fees. When I went to check the balance online, it gave me an error saying this card didn't exist.

I called customer service and was forwarded to a supervisor who told me the gift card was deactivated (didn't give a reason why). I had to go back to the store and the cashier spoke to customer service who transferred the balance to a new gift card. It was an hour long ordeal.

My friend also had a similar issue a few months ago. Her JCP gift card said invalid but she had never used it (there were no stores near her when she got it). The cashier said it was inactive and threw it out. Now I wish she saved the gift card and called customer service because it was probably deactivated.

So check all of your gift cards and use them as soon as possible!

P.S. Does anyone know why retail gift cards can't expire/have fees but those prepaid AmEx or VISA gift cards can? I've lost a few of those due to fees or expiration dates :(

Edited to add: I've read stories online of people's gift card balances being used by scammers, especially if they purchased the gift card through a resale site or if the company has had a security breach so make sure to watch out for that as well.
