A little background information on myself: German, 21 years old, going to university, still living with my parents, and have no regular income. Savings i have none. I get 100€ a month to live and yet i don't have to buy groceries that often so about 80% of that money goes to stuff i enjoy. During summer months (april-oct.) i work as much as i want for ~8.75€/hr. I can decide how much i can squeeze into my free time and still be happy, so i can make up to 1200 a month, but i wouldn't have personal space/time which i highly enjoy. 300ish € is something i can easily manage to make if i work 1 or 2 days a week and still be happy. Even 500-600€ is doable. As you may have noticed being happy is an important thing for me.

Now the important part. Mostly i read about U.S. stuff in here yet i'm from Germany.

The last few years i made my own money yet i still don't have to pay taxes, because i make less than 5400€ a year (iirc thats the threshold for not paying taxes if i'm younger than a certain age and still study). I always thought if i don't pay taxes i do not have to file them. But i think i misunderstood something.

I want to start filing my own taxes (don't know if that is even the best terminology to use) for 2 simple reasons. 1. I want to be more Independent and i want to know how things are done. 2. IIRC i can get tax refund from things i buy for university.

I don't want to ask my parents because i kinda want to surprise them. Yet i have no clue where to start and what to do.

TL;DR German, 21yrs old, university, living with parents, i make a bit of money (not much tho), know shit about taxes, yet i want to get independent and kinda surprise my parents. Don't know where to start, don't know what to do.

Extra: I know i could save up some money, will try this year.

I got some cryptocurrencies, mostly i got them as gifts, is that something i should tell my parents cause they file taxes and they should know or is that irrelevant as long as i don't sell them?
