My husband and I just bought a very large 103 year old house and gave no thought to the fact that the trim on many/most of the windows and doors had been painted over many times and was gunky and flaking and would need to be dealt with. We were trying to get pregnant and I was afraid that there was lead paint under the top layer so we decided to start removing it. My husband and our 6 lb cat are also asthmatic, and I'm sure peeling paint wouldn't be good for anyone in the house. We put some "safe" chemical strippers on a few of our door frames a few days ago and it has turned out to be a huge, goopy, time consuming mess with no end in sight. We have been wearing HEPA masks and gloves and taping down plastic under our work sites and thoroughly cleaning after we scrape. I just ordered a HEPA/RRP compliant vac but I'm worried about paint chips getting tracked everywhere and being unintentionally picked up by our cat. We have also decided to put off pregnancy indefinitely until we finish the project, which worries me because I'm 32 and the clock is ticking. Any advice from DIY'ers who have been there before? Have we turned our house into a superfund site? via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2sO0uRy
