I live in Connecticut and I got a letter from the State of Connecticut Department of Revenue Services. It says that Newegg has provided records of my online purchases during taxable years 2014, 2015, and 2016 that I was not charged state sales tax on.
It says the total purchases made during this time frame are around $2000 so I owe about $125 in taxes, $13 in interest, and $13 in penalties. It also says that if I sign the enclosed "Use Tax Acceptance Form" acknowledging that I made purchases/owe the taxes I can pay this amount minus the penalties.
The actual details included in this letter are pretty vague other than the totals. It only says that I made purchases during at least one of the listed years. There's no actual dates or transaction details included.
I'll have find all my records and try to check the accuracy of these claims. I did buy a lot of expensive parts to build a computer at one point, but I believe that was in summer-fall in 2013, not the listed years.
What is the legality of this? Am I really responsible for paying this if the retailer refused to collect sales tax? Can I dispute/refuse to pay this? Can I at least request an itemized list to see what they believe I owe money on?
EDIT:
Thanks for your input everyone. It seems like it's real/there's no way out of this. Other than verifying numbers, there's not much to do other than pay it. I guess I'm just not purchasing from Newegg again if it turns into tax hassles like this.
