About 13 years ago I started a job in a "laboratory". It's in quotes because I use the term loosely. They called themselves a lab, but it was more light industrial work. Anyway, the owner was a little adamant that everyone had to wear khakis. It made sense in an office environment, but not here. I was quite literally ripping through cheap khakis in any where from 2 weeks to 3 months, max. Finally, I bought a pair of Dickies 847 Khaki pants from Walmart. They were khaki in appearance, but far more rugged than the typical office apparel. They worked so well, I bough a second set. Since this purchase (under $40), I have had two different jobs since, both in similar high wear environments. Finally, last week, I reached the point where I had to turn them in for a new set. One of them had a belt loop which was blown out, and three of four cuffs were beginning to fray. Those two pairs of Dickies 847 khaki pants lasted me working full time for over a decade. Today I picked up two more pairs for another $40. In my opinion, I may not have bought them for life, but they totally paid for themselves many times over. It should be said, I don't plan to retire those old pants. I plan to fix the belt loops, cut and hem the legs about knee length and make a decent pair of shorts. I can totally use these in the garage this summer. Disclaimer: You sacrifice some style wearing these pants. For one, you are obviously wearing whatever color you bought. Second, they have belt loops a little under an inch wide, which has a different look than most office khakis. Third, these almost need to be broken in like leather. My old pairs are comfortable as hell; these new ones feel like cardboard. It takes time to break them in.
