Hey guys. I have posted this before, but I am really conflicted. I have recently taken my first full-time offer at a local CPA firm that is about 5 minutes from my house. Through negotiation, I got my salary to 29k + overtime (which is at my regularly hourly rate of ~$15). This, if I did the math right, should come out to roughly $31-32k for my first year.
Some facts about job 1: With this job, though, I have more upside, I think. I have every intention on sitting for my CPA. The firm I am working for only has 3 CPA's with one about to retire.
Willing to work with me and teach me along the way.
The job I am interviewing for is about an hour drive, which I would have to take 5-6 times a week. The salary starts in the $40k's + overtime. The pro here is obviously the money, which is why I applied there in the first place, but that may be short term thinking. Without knowing the company that's really the only Pro I can think of now.
The cons are the drive, the costs for wear and tear on my car, lunch every day, gas, and the normal costs of commuting to work and the things that come along with it. As of now, those are the only ones I can think of.
Now, I know I should worry about the interview first, but they sounded very interested in me. I am trying to figure out the right thing to do for me, not only short-term, but long term. I think that Job 1 offers the best money and ease of opportunity to advance in the long-term, but another 10kish a year right now sounds great as well. I need some advice!!
TLDR; should i take a job that pays a very low salary for new employees, but offers the easiest path to promotion and more money long-term, or take the job that pays more now that I must commute an hour to and may not offer the same opportunity later on?
Any information that could aid in advice giving will be given if you tell me what to provide.
edit:I should have clarified, the $29k is based off of a 38 hour work week, or, 1976 working hours a year.
